Biography

A graduate of Pennsylvania State University’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Mr. Berlent has been interested in architecture since childhood. After receiving his professional degree, defending his thesis on the temporary inhabitation of a Street Vendor Commissary building in New York City, he returned to New York, where he has worked for the last 16 years. His experience for a variety of New York City firms has concentrated on mid-rise residential buildings and commercial renovations and additions. He also gained valuable experience on institutional projects for the New York Public Library and the United Methodist Church.

A core staff member at Alspector Architecture for the past nine years, Mr. Berlent most recently is nearing completion of the firm’s Grace Chruch School High School. Previously he worked on the firm’s Graduate Research Commons for Bobst Library at NYU, on the General Purpose Classroom wing for NYU, and on the new headquarters and treatment facility for the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis in NYC. He managed these projects through design and construction with demanding construction schedules. Mr. Berlent was the project architect for the architecturally and structurally complex Grace Church School Gymnasium building, where he worked on all phases from preconstruction services through construction documents. As the firm’s point person for construction administration, he saw the construction of the project to completion in early 2007, helping to navigate the challenge of a tight site—portions of which were underground and in the public right-of-way, phased construction around occupied school buildings and a fast-track schedule; all complicated by regulatory demands of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, the NYC Building Department, MTA New York City Transit, the NYC Department of Transportation and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Mr. Berlent also worked on the Bobst Library Master Planning and Phase I renovations projects, and on the Digital Learning Center at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
