Knoll International
This new 6 story building in Boston’s historic Back-Bay to house the regional showroom and offices for Knoll International, the modernist furniture manufacturer, capitalized on the variety of the historic context and distinguished itself as an example of the classical modern period. As an icon and a showroom competing with other elaborate commercial storefronts, the facade was nevertheless derived from an analysis of the existing immediate adjacent formal context and the spatial engagement of the urban streetscape. The 3-story showroom included complete interiors, a roof terrace over the show window and an interconnecting stairway traced by neon lighting.
