Competition winning project for a 21st Century, state-of-the-art iconic reimagining. restoration, renovation, and expansion of the main circulating branch in the NYPL library system. Work progressed through Design Development before being shelved in the aftermath of the events of 9/11. Multiple public-agency approval, including DASNY and NYC, NYS, and US governments. Private and public funding. Library program elements included 5 double height ‘Information Commons’ for Reference, Art, History & Social Sciences, Periodicals, and Language & Literature as well as departments such as Popular Library, Picture Collection, Staff Offices and automated book return and sorting system. Other elements included 20,000 sf of prime ground floor and lower level income generating retail space to help support library activities. Public-private funding model. Jacob Alspector served as Principal Designer and Associate Principal in Charge, one of his last projects at Gwathmey Siegel & Associates before establishing his own practice.
